New short story!
And progress report on current project
Hello, everyone, long time no see!
I think it’s been three months since I last sent a newsletter? Yikes. Sorry. I’ve still been struggling with long COVID and chronic migraines, so I’ve been tending to my health. Trying my best to focus on recovery/managing pain.
I’ve been getting back into writing and am really excited about a paranormal romance novel I’m writing, but I’m going to keep the details to myself for now until I’ve finished the draft. Don’t want to raise expectations and then fail to deliver because of health issues. But I’m shooting for a late September/early October release!
This project—which I’ll call OH here—is different from my other paranormal romances. It’s longer, and I’m experimenting with storytelling. OH has a murder mystery at the core of its plot, but I also want to incorporate tons of scenes that are just about the main characters falling in love and being domestic with each other. There’s so much I want to write with these characters, and I’m giving myself the freedom to write it. It might not be popular, but I want chapters that don’t move the story forward. I want scenes where the characters just exist and you, the reader, can take a break from life and exist in their quirky little world.
Working on OH has me nervous as hell, though. I’ve had to change my writing process a lot because my long COVID brain has severe memory issues. I’m journaling a lot about what I’m doing in OH so I can review things easily, but I’m still struggling to see more than one scene at a time. Thinking of the overall plot is near impossible for me, which is not at all how I operated in the past.
Once the book is written, I’ll send it off to people better than me to help me fix it, but there’s still a certain anxiety in working in such a fragile state. OH definitely has a character who suspiciously shares a brain like mine (weird, eh?), so I’ve been channeling some of my feelings into him. Writing his chapters make me relieved, though, because I know no matter how broken he is, he will get a happy ending.
Here’s hoping I will get my happy ending, broken or not.
